Review of 13 BCDs from various manufacturers.
As the lowest costing BCD of those being reviewed, the Guardian offers extremely good value for money without scrimping on features. It has no fewer than 12 stainless-steel D-rings, which offer every type of kit configuration. All the fastening clips are very positive and easy to undo with gloved hands. There are two dump valves as standard and a blanking cap is provided should a third one be required. For the die-hard UK diver there is a pocket to hold an emergency air cylinder. A nice touch is the inclusion of an air horn, which is built into the inflator, for attracting attention at the surface. The pockets are massive, although the Velcro fastener doesn’t look very strong, which is the only small criticism that we have.

How Northern Diver manages to produce a jacket of this standard for this price is something the other manufacturers should be worried about. The Guardian offers very good value for money. When it comes to features, the jacket is nothing special, but for the UK sport diver it is more than adequate. The pockets are huge, although I would have liked to see a bit more Velcro or even a zip to secure their contents. There are plenty of D-rings and two hose clips.
Apart from the Commando, the Guardian is the only BC to offer an air-bottle option. The kit comes with the jacket but the bottle is an optional extra. In use this BC was on par with all the other BCs tested and, as we didn’t have the air cylinder option, we found the pouch useful for storing a DSMB. In terms of looks, this BC wins no prizes but it offers excellent value for money.
